As @CurranCentral said during his TEDxYouth talk last April, “If you want us to learn about the world, we need to learn with the world.”
This week, we put those words into action as we participated in the SkypeAThon 2016. The Digital Citizenship Institute and DigCitKids connected with five classrooms in Scotland, a classroom in Ontario, two classrooms in Pennsylvania, a classroom in Texas and we also made one Skype call to Kenya. Lesson from today’s show: we all have a responsibility to be good digital citizens
JSB Talks Digital is a weekly podcast show hosted by social media author, strategist, consultant, speaker and trainer Joanne Sweeney-Burke. Each Friday Joanne shares her digital marketing and social media insights from her work as CEO of Digital Training Institute.
It is no longer uncommon or special for school administrators and teachers to use social media to share the great things their students are doing in classrooms, on sports fields, on stage, or out in the community. They use Facebook to reach parents, Snapchat to reach students, and Instagram and Twitter to bridge the generations. We educators need to remember to consistently and positively talk with and model for our students when it comes to social media. Think about it as an ongoing 3-part cycle. I like to call it the E3 Cycle.
At EPIK Deliberate Digital, we look for opportunities to spotlight people who are deliberately involving youth in creating a culture that fosters positive digital citizenship. We were thrilled to interview Marialice B.F.X. Curran, Ph.D., founder and CEO of Digital Citizenship Institute, about her son, Curran, and about a new organization called DigCitKids. Watch for a guest post from Curran, coming soon!
